Aghdashloo received an Academy Award nomination

Iranian born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo is shown in a scene from the film 'House of Sand and Fog' in this undated publicity photograph. Aghdashloo received an Academy Award nomination January 27, 2004 for best performance by an actress in a supporting role, for her work in the film.

Additional from USAToday :

Shohreh Aghdashloo

Nominated for: Best supporting actress, House of Sand and Fog. The dark drama co-stars Aghdashloo as Nadi, the quietly compassionate wife of a tough Iranian colonel, played by Ben Kingsley.

Who she is: Aghdashloo fled Iran in 1978 after the Islamic Revolution and lived in London before settling in Calabasas, Calif. The actress, 51, once a star in her native country, acted only intermittently. That's why the Oscar nomination tastes so sweet. "My husband came in and told me and I said, 'Yes, yes.' I was half asleep, half awake," says Aghdashloo, who lives with husband Houshang Touzie, 53, and daughter Tara, 15. "Then I said, 'Oh my God.' I remembered, 'This is Oscar.' "

What's next: She's mulling over several films but hasn't firmed anything up yet.
